Please note that when ordering from Scholastic, please include your name on the order form. It is most helpful. If you don’t want your child to see what you’ve ordered, please make a note on your order form so I do not hand it to them. As well, I am not able to take cash for the orders. You can now pay online or by cheque as per the instructions on the order form.

Although the students wrote in their agendas that Orange Shirt Day is on the 29th, it has actually been changed to Tuesday, September 27th. We have discussed the story that inspired Orange Shirt Day, which is about a little girl at a residential school being told she can not wear her favourite orange shirt. We have also discussed how Orange Shirt Day is about supporting the idea that all children everywhere should be allowed to have a good education that is respectful of them and their culture.
Thursday, September 22nd is Meet the Teacher Night from 6pm-7pm. This event will be a meet and greet. If you haven't had the chance to meet me yet, I will be here! As well your child might like to show you his/her classroom and some of the work he/she has been doing. There will be no presentations as all the classroom information has been sent home in newsletters and posted on the website. I will not be able to provide you with information on your child is doing academically yet. It is still very soon and I am still gathering information on the children and getting to know them academically. As soon my district provided FreshGrade account is ready, I will begin posting academic information to your child's portfolio. It should be ready soon.
A Couple of Things Thank you so much for sending all the school supplies right away! All the students had them here on Monday so we were able to sort and label them all. They were so excited to get their suppliesJ I have put away some of their supplies to hand out in January, i.e. markers, glue sticks and bottles, erasers, pencil crayons, and new pencils will be handed out regularly. As well thank you for the Parent Questionnaire forms that have been returned already. These are super helpful to me in getting to know the children as quickly as possible. Agendas will be used regularly and integrated into the curriculum. The routine will be to bring them to school each day and first thing in the morning have them open on their desks for me to check and sign. This way I will see any notes from you right away. This will also be a time for them to set a daily goal, which will be indicated with a star. It may take awhile to get the hang of goal setting and until then you’ll probably get a few chuckles in. The agendas will then go home to be checked daily by you. I have explained to the students that it is their responsibility to have you check it. I have suggested that they bring it to you open with a pen (to initial that you saw it) and a kiss so that it is no work at all for you. However having a specific spot to put it when they unpack their backpacks could also work well for your family. Another communication tool that I will be using is Fresh Grade. This is an online portfolio system that is password protected and approved of by the school district. I can take pictures or videos of your child and his/her work and upload them to each child’s portfolio. For me to post pictures and videos of your child and their work for you to view in their portfolio, I do need the attached forms completed and returned. If you would like to know more information about Fresh Grade, you can find more information at: https://www.freshgrade.com/parents/our-products, or be sure to ask me at Meet the Teacher night which will be held on Thursday, September 22nd at 6pm. Trust me each portfolio ends up filled with adorableness! As well these forms give permission for staff at the school to use internet-based learning tools with your child and as well as media consent for your child’s images. I will not be posting pictures of the children on our website but I will make a slideshow of photos taken throughout the year that you will be able to download at the end of the year. If you do not want to give full media consent but do wish to have your child included in a Fresh Grade portfolio and end of the year slideshow then please make a note of that on the Student Image Permission Form. While on the topic of images, please note that if you take a photo or video of your child at school and plan to post it anywhere online, it should not include the faces of any other students, staff, or parents unless you have consent. Have a lovely weekend, Stacey Hernberg
Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays - P.E. in the gym
Thursdays - Library Book Exchange Fridays - are Fun Fridays when we do extra fun activities for all the subjects, we also have Music on Fridays WELCOME! Dear Families of Division 18; Welcome to Division 18. My name is Stacey Hernberg. I have been teaching at James Kennedy Elementary for a few years now and I have been teaching in the Langley School District for a number of years. I hope you had a good summer, although it may seem a distant memory by now. The school year is off to a terrific start! I am enjoying getting to know my new students who all seem so sweet and I am very happy to have some of my former students for another year. They will make terrific helpers and role models. Here is some information that I’m sure you will find helpful as you help your child adjust to the new school year. I know that everyone is busy but please take the time to read the information that follows because it will help your child have a more successful year. Class Website For announcements, reminders, copies of newsletters, please refer weekly to the website for our classroom at: http://mshernbergsclass.weebly.com It try to update it at the end of the week, ideally Friday, so checking it on the weekend should give you the newest information. School Supplies Now that your child is in their set classroom for the year, it is time for them to bring their school supplies. If you purchased them through Creative Children, then the kits are at the school and will be distributed to the students. If you have purchased the school supplies form other sources, please send all the items together in a bag on Monday. On Monday we will do The Great School Supply Sort and Label! Fun, fun! Please send a pair of clean and labeled indoor running shoes for you child to keep at school. This will help keep the floors in the classroom reasonably clean. Primary students sit on the floor for various activities. When students don’t have indoor shoes it makes a noticeable mess. As well we do physical activities every day and the appropriate footwear (runners) is important for safety. Don’t feel that you need to buy new shoes. Used runners can be cleaned, labeled and kept at school in our cloakroom. Additionally, reusable water bottles with closing spouts (unspillable) are encouraged. Students can keep these on their desks throughout the day. These should only be filled with water. Agendas The cost of the agenda planner is $6. Agendas are a vital form of student-parent-teacher communication. They are also a great habit to get into. These can be purchased through me. Please send this fee as soon as possible in the form of cash or cheque made payable to James Kennedy Elementary. In the future, all newsletters will be sent home in the agenda. I will also check the agendas each morning so if you have any information to share with me please jot it down in the agenda under “Parent/Teacher Comments”. This is better than telling me at the door in the morning as I am greeting students. My multi-tasking memory isn’t as strong as it used to be, but if I read it once the students are settled, then I will remember it so much easier. Birthdays Birthdays are important times. If interested, you are welcome to send a small birthday treat to share with the class to celebrate your child’s birthday. Please include a nut free treat for each student (24 students) such as individual treats like muffins, yogurt tubes, cookies, or cupcakes, which are easier to distribute than a whole birthday cake. Please respect that birthday invitations are not to be distributed in the class unless there is one for everyone in which case I can hand them out at the end of the day. This prevents any hurt feelings or misunderstandings. When children hand out some invitations in the class and not everyone gets one it hurts the sense of community that we work so hard to build in the classroom. Healthy Food In order for the children to maintain energy and focus throughout the day, nutritious snacks and lunches are encouraged (e.g. fruit, vegetables, cheese, crackers, yogurt, sandwiches…) Please avoid sending sugary snacks, pop, or candy, as these items make learning difficult. Please do not send your child with any nuts or nut products as there are allergies in our class. Special Days Next week I will post our special days on the class website. These are the days that we have library book exchange, gym, and music. Questionnaire In order to get to know your child and you better, please fill out the accompanying questionnaire (below) and return it by the end of September. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this information. I am sure this will be a terrific year! Sincerely, Stacey Hernberg
Should be set by Thursday afternoon. Your child will bring home a ink slip of paper on Thursday afternoon. This will have the name of their new teacher as well as the room number of their new classroom.
