WELCOME!
Dear Families of Division 18;
Welcome to Division 18. My name is Stacey Hernberg. I have been teaching at James Kennedy Elementary for a few years now and I have been teaching in the Langley School District for a number of years. I hope you had a good summer, although it may seem a distant memory by now. The school year is off to a terrific start! I am enjoying getting to know my new students who all seem so sweet and I am very happy to have some of my former students for another year. They will make terrific helpers and role models.
Here is some information that I’m sure you will find helpful as you help your child adjust to the new school year. I know that everyone is busy but please take the time to read the information that follows because it will help your child have a more successful year.
Class Website
For announcements, reminders, copies of newsletters, please refer weekly to the website for our classroom at:
http://mshernbergsclass.weebly.com
It try to update it at the end of the week, ideally Friday, so checking it on the weekend should give you the newest information.
School Supplies
Now that your child is in their set classroom for the year, it is time for them to bring their school supplies. If you purchased them through Creative Children, then the kits are at the school and will be distributed to the students. If you have purchased the school supplies form other sources, please send all the items together in a bag on Monday. On Monday we will do The Great School Supply Sort and Label! Fun, fun!
Please send a pair of clean and labeled indoor running shoes for you child to keep at school. This will help keep the floors in the classroom reasonably clean. Primary students sit on the floor for various activities. When students don’t have indoor shoes it makes a noticeable mess. As well we do physical activities every day and the appropriate footwear (runners) is important for safety. Don’t feel that you need to buy new shoes. Used runners can be cleaned, labeled and kept at school in our cloakroom.
Additionally, reusable water bottles with closing spouts (unspillable) are encouraged. Students can keep these on their desks throughout the day. These should only be filled with water.
Agendas
The cost of the agenda planner is $6. Agendas are a vital form of student-parent-teacher communication. They are also a great habit to get into. These can be purchased through me. Please send this fee as soon as possible in the form of cash or cheque made payable to James Kennedy Elementary. In the future, all newsletters will be sent home in the agenda. I will also check the agendas each morning so if you have any information to share with me please jot it down in the agenda under “Parent/Teacher Comments”. This is better than telling me at the door in the morning as I am greeting students. My multi-tasking memory isn’t as strong as it used to be, but if I read it once the students are settled, then I will remember it so much easier.
Birthdays
Birthdays are important times. If interested, you are welcome to send a small birthday treat to share with the class to celebrate your child’s birthday. Please include a nut free treat for each student (24 students) such as individual treats like muffins, yogurt tubes, cookies, or cupcakes, which are easier to distribute than a whole birthday cake. Please respect that birthday invitations are not to be distributed in the class unless there is one for everyone in which case I can hand them out at the end of the day. This prevents any hurt feelings or misunderstandings. When children hand out some invitations in the class and not everyone gets one it hurts the sense of community that we work so hard to build in the classroom.
Healthy Food
In order for the children to maintain energy and focus throughout the day, nutritious snacks and lunches are encouraged (e.g. fruit, vegetables, cheese, crackers, yogurt, sandwiches…) Please avoid sending sugary snacks, pop, or candy, as these items make learning difficult. Please do not send your child with any nuts or nut products as there are allergies in our class.
Special Days
Next week I will post our special days on the class website. These are the days that we have library book exchange, gym, and music.
Questionnaire
In order to get to know your child and you better, please fill out the accompanying questionnaire (below) and return it by the end of September.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this information. I am sure this will be a terrific year!
Sincerely,
Stacey Hernberg
